Annual Events
Dallas Lecture
The Dallas Lecture was established in 1942 and is so named in honour of the late John Dallas of Cowcaddens, a merchant director of the Chamber of Commerce, who bequeathed funds to establish the Lecture. Although sadly, we have now spent the funds that were bequeathed, we are proud to continue the tradition of the Lecture and preserve the original concept of the event. Recent speakers have included Jackie Stewart, Jeremy Paxman, Magnus Magnusson, Martin Bell and Pat Kane.
Colquhoun Dinner
In 2008 we will celebrate the 71st Colquhoun Dinner. This is a traditional
dinner focused on the city of Glasgow. The dinner honours someone who has
contributed to the success of Glasgow (the illustrious forebear). The
speeches include a toast to the illustrious forebear, a toast to the City
and Commerce and a review of The Herald headlines of 100 years ago. Various
prominent people in the city are invited to attend including the Lord
Provost, Deacon Convenor, Lord Dean of Guild, President of Chamber of
Commerce and principals of the universities. Many of the 200 or so people
who attend the dinner are members of the Colquhoun Club. These are past
Glasgow Junior Chamber Members who have been recognised as making a
significant contribution to the organisation.
Oulu Twinning Weekend
Did you know that Glasgow has its own set of triplets? We have named them
Leeds, Dublin & Oulu.
They are all doing fine & they all miss us so much. We always wish that we
could see them again, especially the Finnish one. Oh wait a minute there is - The Oulu twinning & crayfish banquet weekend.
This is an annual tradition every August where delegates from Glasgow take
a long trip. I say long as it can normally involve 2 or 3 flights. Glasgow
has been doing this for the past 19 years.
Just ask any of the previous visiting Glasgow delegation who have said it
is a really fantastic trip & a once in a lifetime experience to sample
local Finnish hospitality.
Of course there is the matters of eating lots of crayfish & drinking
Finnish vodka.
Our Finnish friends also come over for the Colquhoun Dinner where we swap
the all important friendship batons.
Lords Provosts Procession
This is an annual parade by local organisations in Glasgow. The route
starts from George Square and ends at Glasgow Green. Traditionally Glasgow
Junior Chamber of Commerce provides marshalls for the event so you get to
wear a yellow bib and use a walkie-talkie. It is always a good day.
