Knockabout Debating - The fun has just begun...

Debating Driven Forward
The first meeting of the newly established debating club got off to a flying start on Thursday 16th April. Ably led by Scott Johnston, we commenced with the basics regarding rules and conventions, separating our points of information from our timeouts and then kicked the interactive sessions off with an informal demonstration from some of the more experienced debaters.
The humour was evident as the captain of the proposition deputy chair, Richard Kerr tried to convince the audience to believe his arguments supporting the motion This House believes ‘We all look good naked”. We heard how looking good is about confidence and comes from within. Thankfully, he chose to make his points fully clothed!
Kathleen Kilpatrick stepped up to the plate as captain of the opposition and after being subtly reminded to introduce her team successfully rebutted the many points made by Richard’s naked arguments. Referring to the cost to the environment of everyone being naked and also the old adage that less is more Miss Kilpatrick convinced the audience that the reasons for apparel are most apparent.
Past Chairman Murrae lent support to Richard’s argument by highlighting the importance of making the most of your curves and the fact that nudity brings freedom from material concerns. Highlighting the ongoing success of Gok Wan’s strategy she advised us to let it all hang out…
The Chair will be the first to admit she was decidedly rusty as she took to the ‘podium’ but reminding us why we are not all supermodels made us all resolve to go to the gym more often.
In the end the audience gave the opposition a victory and then after a quick debrief it was time for our novices to have a go.
Second motion of the evening was ‘This house believes all elected politicians should receive an internet porn allowance’ and the newbies attacked it with gusto. An excellent 3 a side debate showed us all that there is definitely some fantastic new blood to drive our debating club forward.
